The SEQUIL Systems team is made up of highly educated, experienced professionals who are dedicated to making buildings more efficient, healthier, and less impactful to the environment.

Heather Appell


AAIA, LEED AP BD+C, NGBS Certifying Agent

As senior sustainability project manager, Heather provides design analysis and construction administration for sustainable buildings using LEED and other green building rating systems.  In addition, she provides clients with comprehensive sustainability consulting to guide operations, policies, and procedures. With a Masters in Architecture from the University of Florida, she also has Certificates in Historic Preservation and Sustainable Design. This provides her with an understanding of new versus old environments and how to embrace existing conditions. With over eight years of experience, Heather has worked primarily on high-rise residential, commercial and educational projects. She has worked on projects all over, including New York, South America and Ethiopia. In the past, she has served as Associate Director for the AIA Palm Beach Chapter and continues to partake in community involvement.

Jef Conley

Principal / Founder


As its Founder and Managing Principal, Jef provides leadership across all facets of the SEQUIL Systems organization. His original mission as a trusted advisor has organically evolved into a world-class, award-winning firm which consistently delivers outstanding services to clients and project teams. Jef has forged a creative, collaborative, productive and balanced work environment to motivate and inspire the SEQUIL team.  

Jef began his career with two of the largest consulting engineering firms in New York City. His work experience in NYC included museums, hospitals, laboratories and world-class commercial developments on several continents. 11 years later he brought his experience to South Florida, and soon after started SEQUIL Systems in 2002.

Charles Curt, PE

Senior Engineer


Mr. Curt is the ranking senior engineer and driving force behind SEQUIL’s commissioning procedures and processes.  He has extensive experience on a broad range of projects for corporate, government, healthcare, laboratory and university clientele.  His work includes design engineering, commissioning and certification of more than 50 medical and laboratory facilities.  As a recognized authority on engineering and building commissioning, Mr. Curt has served as Chief Engineer, Senior Vice President, Principal and CEO of leading engineering firms in the U.S.

Michael Lydon

As the newest member of the SEQUIL team, Michael brings over 10 years of expertise in facility assessment, lifecycle-based computer modeling and cost forecasting. He has conducted assessments for many organizations, facilities, and building types for an array of federal, state, and local government clients throughout the U.S. and abroad. His portfolio includes the completion of hundreds of condition assessments of national research laboratories, agriculture, military/defense, diplomatic, space, aviation, nuclear, energy, mining, healthcare, university, K-12, and municipal facilities.

Michael is often the face of the SEQUIL team during construction, providing ongoing commissioning inspections while witnessing startups and pre-functional testing.  He draws on his diverse depth of knowledge to guide owners, contractors, and design teams on system optimization.



Jason Matiacio, PE

LEED AP BD+C, BEMP (Building Energy Modeling Professional)

Jason brings over 10 years of project management, engineering design, and commissioning experience to the SEQUIL team.  His portfolio includes the completion of hundreds of energy models ranging from ESCO projects to LEED certification, management of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) design and construction projects including site utilities, energy plant design and optimization, and mechanical system design of new construction and existing building renovation projects.  

Jason is dedicated to assisting project teams in constructing sustainable buildings while improving building energy performance to reduce the carbon footprint.  As a technical expert on energy modeling and indoor air quality, Jason complements the SEQUIL approach to building commissioning with his knowledge of design, construction, and building optimization.



Elena Painter

Office Manager

LEED Green Associate

A South Florida native, Elena changed her career path from real estate to sustainability and became the Office Manager at SEQUIL.  In addition to designing and implementing office policies, Elena works with the marketing department and assists with the professional relations management at SEQUIL.  Working for SEQUIL answered her desire to focus on the environment and the local community.  As Secretary for the USGBC South Florida Board, she finds fulfillment in volunteering and taking an active role with organizations that help promote sustainability in schools.



Joe Snider, AIA, LEED Fellow

FGBC High-Rise Designated Professional

As a recipient of the prestigious LEED Fellow designation, Joe has managed the certification of numerous LEED projects throughout Florida, New Mexico, and Latin America. His work has included a broad scope of projects including warehouse and distribution centers, educational facilities, multi-family residential, museums and libraries.  In addition to his work on sustainable design and construction projects, Joe has worked extensively with city and county governments to implement sustainable policies.  Joe also has served as a volunteer in many capacities for different green building and civic organizations over the years. He currently sits on the Palm Beach County Zoning Commission and serves on the USGBC Florida Advocacy Committee.


Carolina Whitfield

Director Business Development


Carolina leads two separate aspects of the operation; as the Director of Business Development, Carolina coordinates the expansion of SEQUIL’s portfolio locally and in South America and she continues to spear the acquisition of new business.  Additionally, with a Masters in Environmental Science and over nine years background in Environmental Engineering she has worked primarily on commercial and industrial projects as well as commercial projects, while providing her expertise in land use and waste management.  In her role as Junior Project Manager, Carolina manages all LEED for Existing Buildings Operation and Management (EBOM) projects domestically and assists on other LEED NC projects, primarily in South America.  She is fluent in both, English and Spanish.
